Real SOS! Kaminoseki Just before the beginning of COP10, on Oct.15, we want to bring to your attention the commencement of the destruction of one of the most environmentally important areas in Japan. The place is called Kaminoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The cause of the problem is the construction of a new nuclear power plant on this island. The citizens throughout Japan are almost never informed of such projects. They are not aware, and never informed, of the negative impact on the environment and its biodiversity. Presently, only the residents of the island and surrounding districts are against this construction and are making an effort to stop it. If the forced construction continues, the entire area will be endangered. We can’t afford to miss the opportunity to solve this problem during COP10. In order to correct this situation, we wish to appeal to the international community of COP10. We request that the organizations concerned below, realize and enact
upon the following three items in the agenda: l To confront the Kaminoseki problem at COP10 l The media of each country publicize the facts. l To sign a petition to suspend the landfill construction work at Kaminoseki Nuclear Power plant and correctly re-investigate the environmental assessment. Additionally we want to work together to spread the truth and solve the problem. We believe the protection of the sea at Kaminoseki will lead to the prevention of horrible devastation in other similar regions. Kaminoseki No Umi Wo Mamoritai COP10 Action “ Real SOS! Kaminoseki Action” ・Oct. 26, 2010 8:30-9:30 In front of the main gate at the COP10 Conference Hall (Refer to the map on the front page).We appeal to the participants of COP10 by distributing fliers and carrying banners. ・From Oct. 25 to the end of Oct. 26 We ask that each group will display a green heart in the shape of Kaminoseki Iwaishima island , and to please wear a green heart.
